The heartrending cry of blind Bartimaeus in Luke 18 for Jesus to have mercy on him and restore his sight is an excellent illustration of the power of importunity in your daily prayer life.
There are multiple places in the Bible that shows us the secret for having a successful prayer life, it goes all the way back to the book of Genesis, and it's encapsulated in the beautiful Old English word of 'importunity'. The Webster's 1828 dictionary defines 'importunity' as a 'Pressing solicitation; urgent request; application for a claim or favor, which is urged with troublesome frequency or pertinacity. Men are sometimes overcome by the importunity of their wives or children.' And that's what your prayer life should look like.
"And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves; For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him? And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee. I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth." Luke 11:5-8 (KJB)
This teaching on importunity is found in the story of Jacob wrestling with the Angel of the LORD in Genesis 32, God's command for the watchmen over Jerusalem in Isaiah 62, the Syrophenician woman in Mark 7, the unjust judge in Luke 18, and the friend in Luke 11 who comes knocking on the door at midnight, needing bread for an unexpected guest. The heartrending cry of blind Bartimaeus in Luke 18 for Jesus to have mercy on him and restore his sight is also an excellent illustration of importunity. Today I would like to bring you a much-needed message on the importance of importunity in prayer which could very well be a game-changer for you in your daily pray time with the Lord.
