NTEB RADIO BIBLE STUDY: Jesus Says That When Jonah Died In The Whale’s Belly It Was A Picture Of His Own 3-Day Trip To Hell In The Heart Of The Earth

by Geoffrey Grider

The shocking, true story of Jonah being swallowed by a giant whale has unfortunately been repackaged as a child's story in Sunday School for so long, we have stripped it of all its strength and power as it relates to prophecy.

On our NTEB House Church Sunday Morning broadcast today, I preached a message on what Jesus did when He went to Hell for 3 days and 3 nights as He said He would, and while the vast majority of people who listened to it got a blessing from it, it caused others to scratch their heads in disbelief. Many Christians have never been told about what Jesus did when He spent 72 hours in Hell, in the heart of the earth, and mistakenly believe that everything was finished on the cross. The payment for sin was accomplished, yes, but then what to do with the sins He just spent His blood to pay for? That's what Jesus was doing in Hell, the book of Jonah helps us fill in all the details.

"Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish's belly, And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice. For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me. Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple. he waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head. I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God." Jonah 2:1-6 (KJB)

On this episode of Rightly Dividing, we are looking Jonah as a type of Jesus after the cross, going down into the pit of Hell, something that Jesus verifies for us in Matthew 12:40 (KJB). The shocking, true story of Jonah being swallowed by a giant whale has unfortunately been repackaged as a child's story in Sunday School for so long, we have stripped it of all its strength and power as it relates to prophecy. Tonight we will revisit the horror of the death, burial and resurrection of Jonah who went to Hell and came back as an amazing type picture of Jesus Christ and His death, burial and resurrection. This is the gospel of the grace of God, and when we rightly divide what we read, it has incredible doctrinal riches for us here in the closing hours of the Church Age.
