NTEB HOUSE CHURCH SUNDAY MORNING SERVICE: We Can Build The Altar But Only The Fire Of The Lord Can Turn The Hearts Of The People

by Geoffrey Grider

Elijah believed that the LORD would do exactly as He promised, and then the fire of the LORD fell. When was the last time that fire fell in your life?

In 1 Kings 18, we see the incredible tale of the prophet Elijah going up against the prophets of Baal in a pay-per-view battle of the ages. Elijah challenges them to a duel of sorts, to see which 'god' can set the altar with their sacrifice on it ablaze. The prophets of Baal cry out to their god Baal, imploring him to give them the win, he does not. Then Elijah takes his shot, but with a twist, he submerges his altar with water, making it impossible to be set on fire. Impossible for anyone except the God who is the LORD.

"Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again. Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God." 1 Kings 18:37-39 (KJB)

In our lives, as Christians, we oftentimes find ourselves building altars and asking the Lord to bless it, when what we really should be doing is asking for Him to set it on fire and consume it. Why don't we? Because more often than not, we are simply going through the motions, praying small prayers that require little faith, or asking Him for big things while at the same time not really believing He can or will bring it to pass. Elijah heard from the LORD and built an altar, but God wanted the people who stood by to know it was from the LORD so He had Elijah drench the whole thing in water. Elijah believed that the LORD would do exactly as He promised, and then the fire of the LORD fell. When was the last time that fire fell in your life? Today I would like to bring you a message on kindling the fire of the LORD.
